Student Internship

Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects offers the unique opportunity to unlock your full potential while embarking on an enriching educational journey.

As a student intern, you’ll have the unique opportunity to be part of our interactive design process, collaborating closely with an experienced team and contributing to real-world projects. Your role will extend beyond the traditional academic setting, as you immerse yourself in the practical aspects of architecture, including our pioneering work in zero-energy school designs. Here, you’ll not only gain valuable insights but also become a steward of our clients’ visions. You’ll learn to use industry-standard tools and hone essential skills, gaining hands-on experience in the creation of a full set of architectural drawings.

You’ll learn how a project’s design comes together, from initial concepts to detailed plans, including the seamless coordination of all disciplines within a BIM (building information model) environment. Insights will be gained into the architect’s vital role during construction, observing how design concepts are translated into tangible structures, and how architects serve as advocates for design integrity throughout the construction phase.

What You Will Do & Learn

As a STUDENT INTERN, you will undertake a variety of assignments throughout the development of a project, including but not limited to:

  • Rendering to Reality: Work with our team to transform a project’s vision into a built environment. Learning about bringing ideas into reality.
  • Design & Drawing: Collaborate with architects and studio team members to create detailed architectural drawings, presentation drawings, graphic design work, digital models, and 3D models using AutoCAD Architecture, Autodesk Revit, SketchUp, Lumion, Twinmotion, and Adobe Photoshop
  • Documentation: Assist in the preparation of construction documents, specifications, and project reports. Ensure accuracy and compliance with relevant codes and standards.
  • Project Coordination: Work closely with project managers to coordinate tasks and schedules to meet project goals and deadlines.
  • Continual Learning: Learn to use industry-standard software and best practices to enhance your skills.

 

What’s Required:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Architecture and/or Landscape Architecture.
  • Knowledge of Building Information Modeling (BIM), Revit and/or AutoCAD.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.The ability to work autonomously and within a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Eagerness to learn and adapt in a dynamic architectural environment.

Architectural Staff Position

As a member of the Sherman Carter Barnhart team, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate closely with an experienced project team by contributing to the development of architectural drawings. Through this entry-level position, you’ll have the chance to apply the knowledge and skills you’ve acquired during your architectural education while enhancing your skills with industry-standard software such as; AutoCAD Architecture and Autodesk Revit.

If you completed your master’s, we understand that obtaining your architectural registration is a significant milestone, and we are committed to supporting you on this journey. Day to Day Expectations

  • Collaborate with the design team to generate and develop design ideas.
  • Produce design drawings and construction documents, presentation drawings, graphic design work, and digital models using AutoCAD Architecture, AutoDesk Revit, Civil 3D, Carlson Software, SketchUp, Lumion, Twinmotion, and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Work with team members from concept through construction administration.
  • May attend field site inspections to provide field measurements, which frequently involve a physical walk-through of the site.
  • Attends and actively participates in project team meetings.
  • Is self-directed, takes initiative, and seeks thoughtful solutions for design execution.
  • Demonstrates motivation in seeking new responsibilities and challenges.
  • Performs other duties as required.

 

What’s Required

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Architecture.
  • Knowledge of Building Information Modeling (BIM).
  • Experience with Autodesk Revit is preferred.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Architecture is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required.
  • Knowledge of 3D Modeling and Rendering software such as Sketchup, Lumion, and Twinmotion is not required but beneficial.
  • Knowledge of Photoshop and/or Illustrator graphic software is not required but is beneficial.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to stay on task and meet deadlines.
  • The ability to work autonomously and within a team environment.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects is seeking an experienced, self-motivated, talented Architect.

Qualified applicants should have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture
  • State of Kentucky Architectural License or near completion of ARE
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of architectural experience
  • Ability to design, develop contract documents, and perform construction administration
  • Excellent communication skills. Ability to facilitate meetings with the clients, project staff, and consultant coordination
  • The ability to utilize computer systems to effectively manage projects. Required computer skills: AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Adobe, and MS Office

  • State of Kentucky Architectural License or near completion of ARE
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of architectural experience
  • Ability to design, develop contract documents, and perform construction administration
  • Excellent communication skills. Ability to facilitate meetings with the clients, project staff, and consultant coordination
