New secured entry entrance.
Floyd County Schools engaged Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects to develop a design solution to address the aging Betsy Layne High School gymnasium as well as site circulation issues. The design focused on the addition of a new competition gymnasium featuring more seating, additional needs, and modern locker rooms, with the existing gym to be converted into a future auditorium.
The addition also created the opportunity for an updated entry to the school featuring a clearly defined secured entrance as well as the relocation and expansion of the administration suite.
The new gymnasium features 1,750 seats, an indoor netting system for batting practice, as well as areas for archery and air rifle. The gym offers locker rooms for both physical education classes as well as team sports, and a new concession area. The addition also included new energy-efficient building systems and roof, as well as a state-of-the-art sound system for the gym.
Site improvements focused on improving the current parent and bus drop-off with a new loop and 200 car parking lot. The site also includes an exterior courtyard space for outdoor classrooms.
Included in the renovation is a new artificial turf baseball complex.
