A Newly Connected Campus

Implemented in three phases, Sherman Carter Barnhart’s design solution linked South Laurel Middle and High School, dramatically renovated the interior spaces as well as improve the overall energy efficiency of the schools.

Starting with a master plan of the entire campus, the design team, formulated three sequenced phases for implementation. Without missing a day of instruction, and with virtually no part of the two schools going untouched, the design solution, created a dramatic connection between the middle school and high school via a 450 – seat auditorium. While the new auditorium was a much needed program component, it also provided the opportunity to create the much desired unified campus, and new main entrance for the middle school. Other exciting new spaces included a media center flooded with daylighting, and the re-purposing of existing areas into a new administrative area featuring a secure entry, for safety in both the high and middle school. New band/choral rooms, and state-of-the-art science classrooms and labs were also included.
