LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — After a big donation for education, a groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday morning for the new Irvington Elementary School in Breckinridge County.

Local business owner Joey Crist bought the land across from the current school a couple of years ago, but decided it could be put to better use.

“When the school district went out searching for people to sell land to the school district, he said, ‘Why do I need to sell it?’ Why can’t I just donate it?” Irvington Elementary principal Jon Miller said.

“If you’re helping kids, it’s never wrong,” Joey Crist said. “It was the right thing to do”

Construction on the $12 million project is expected to be complete by December 2016.

This is the first new school to be built in Breckinridge County in 20 years.
