Plans are moving forward to combine Allen Central and South Floyd high schools under one, brand new roof.
Floyd County School Board members met briefly Monday to take care of a few details relating to the land where the school will be built.
The site is picked out and plans are on paper for the new Floyd Central High School.
One of the hurdles facing the new school building, says Superintendent Henry Webb, relates to condemnation, the process of securing private property for public use under eminent domain.
Webb says the price of the property, located on state Route 680, turned out to be slightly higher than the figure presented to the Kentucky Department of Education.
To avoid delays, the board voted to move ahead with bidding on the project’s earth work and site drainage package.
“At the same time, we respect the state board and their ability to make this decision, so our board said tonight we’re willing to go forward with that and crossing our fingers that the state board will work with us on what we’re trying to get done for kids here,” Webb said.
The board also approved testing to see if the land will support geothermal heating at the new school and looked at the site’s road crossing agreement.
The superintendent explains the new three story building will feature all the latest in 21st century design and technology.
“The technology’s going to be amazing. A world class facility, energy star school right off the bat. We’re just really excited about all the opportunities that the kids in Floyd County are going to have because of this new facility,” he said.
The bidding process should be complete by mid March, Webb says, laying the groundwork for the new consolidated school.
Webb says bidding and the start of construction on the rest of the project should take place this summer.
He says he expects the project to stay on target to begin classes at the new school in the fall of 2017.
