Michael Smith, AIA, LEED AP

Principal

Mike joined Sherman Carter Barnhart in 1991, becoming a Principal in 2005 and President in 2017. His responsibilities lie in helping shape Sherman Carter Barnhart’s strategic vision and quality of the firm’s work, empowering employees, and creating strong client relationships.  Mike also provides design leadership. A talented planner and designer, much of Mike’s career has been focused on educational facilities, working with both post-secondary as well as K-12 clients. Mike’s most rewarding projects involve the opportunity to program innovative educational spaces. He has traveled throughout the United States researching design and innovations in educational planning and design. His favorite part of the design process is the fruition from ideas on paper to the joy on his client’s face once it’s built.

Outside the office, Mike enjoys traveling, spending time with his wife and two boys, fly fishing and reading. He especially enjoys bourbon. A Bourbon connoisseur, Mike frequently travels the distillery trail through Kentucky.  Mike serves on the Shriners Corporate Council, is an advocate for Colorectal Cancer Awareness and the American Cancer Society organizations, and is a member of the 2007 Lexington Leadership and 2009 Leadership Kentucky classes.
