Sherman Carter Barnhart re-envisions University of Kentucky’s White Hall Classroom Building
University of Kentucky engages Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects with SmithGroup to transform White Hall Classroom Building, an iconic campus site.
Allen County Judicial Center features an octagonal cupola incorporating four illuminated clocks and an open belfry featuring the original bell from the old courthouse.
The new Allen County Judicial Center is located across from the existing County Courthouse, one block west of the public square in Scottsville.
The Owner requested an exterior reflecting some of the features and historical context of a previous courthouse that once occupied the center of the public square. The brick and limestone exterior incorporates traditional design elements including four fluted limestone columns, corner “towers” reminiscent of those on the courthouse, stone quoins and arched window transoms. Another element borrowed from the old courthouse is an octagonal cupola incorporating four illuminated clocks and an open belfry featuring the original bell from the old courthouse. The sloped prefinished metal roof completes the traditional design.
The interior includes a central monumental stair leading to an interior balcony. Walnut millwork occurs throughout, with terrazzo floors and stone tile wainscoting throughout the public areas.
The Judicial Center is designed to achieve Energy Star and includes the following sustainable features:
