Project Details

The Louisville Metro Housing Authority’s (LMHA) original Iroquois Homes, developed on vacant farmland circa 1937, featured over 800 apartments before its demolition in 2012. The isolated neighborhood was bound by single-family homes, Interstate 264, and Taylor Blvd, a major commercial and retail thoroughfare.

Sherman Carter Barnhart’s master plan for the new 46-acre Iroquois Homes development aims to create a park-like, interconnected neighborhood that supports long-term viability and the redevelopment of adjacent areas. The plan integrates seamlessly with existing street patterns and surrounding neighborhoods, incorporating greenways, green spaces, and outdoor venues to foster connectivity and activity. This design emulates its surroundings’ massing, density, and circulation, ensuring a harmonious extension of the local area.

A newly developed greenway will establish the essential physical connection to the existing street grid, enhancing connectivity and activity within the new and adjacent neighborhoods. Inspired by nearby Iroquois Park, the redevelopment includes opportunities for greenspaces and outdoor venues, enriching the community with natural and recreational spaces.

Phase I – New Senior Living Community

The Iroquois Senior Living Community prioritizes affordability, accessibility, and fostering a sense of community. It provides quality, affordable housing for individuals aged 55 and over within the Hazelwood neighborhood. The 60-unit building features secure entrances, administrative offices, lounges, meeting spaces, laundries on each floor, and a first-floor café with access to outdoor seating.

The design promotes quality living for seniors, incorporating park-like green spaces that encourage walking and socializing, fostering physical activity and social interaction. The charming and accessible Hazelwood neighborhood enhances the sense of community and supports sustainable development, offering a vibrant and dynamic place to live.

Situated on approximately three acres within the new Iroquois Homes neighborhood, the Senior Living Community features landscaped, lighted walk paths that enhance security and contribute to the serene surroundings.
