Project Details

The City of Owensboro is planning to construct an Indoor Sports Facility in downtown Owensboro, aiming to boost the city’s standing as a sports tourism destination in the region. This facility will have direct pedestrian access to local hotels, attractions, and the city’s Convention Center, making it a cornerstone of the ongoing revitalization efforts. Sherman Carter Barnhart was entrusted with the task of transforming an entire city block into a top-tier competition sports facility for basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and associated amenities. The project is set to be completed in 2025, and it blends a cost-effective pre-engineered metal building with a conventionally framed entrance and support structure, meeting the owner’s requirement for an architecturally appealing yet budget-conscious design.

During the design process, several recurring themes emerged, with a primary focus on enhancing the user experience driving many of the design choices. The design team carefully considered how different user groups, including players, spectators, and tournament organizers, would have their distinct needs met. For players, meticulous attention was given to the clearances required for all planned sports, and the choice of hardwood flooring materials and durable interior finishes ensures a collegiate-level experience. Ample viewing areas, including a mezzanine overlooking the courts, spacious circulation zones, and restroom facilities exceeding minimum standards, guarantee an exceptional experience for spectators. To accommodate tournament organizers, essential for the facility’s financial success, the design incorporates flexible office and multi-purpose spaces, abundant storage, and controlled ticketing options at the entrance. This comprehensive approach will help to ensure that all user groups will be eager to return to the facility, ultimately contributing to the overall success of the Sports Facility for the City of Owensboro.
