Sherman Carter Barnhart Names Justin McElfresh President

Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects (SCB) has named Justin McElfresh, AIA, President of the firm.

McElfresh, a long-time Principal with more than two decades of experience  in architecture and client service, will help guide SCB into its next era of growth, innovation, and community impact. Mike Smith will continue in his role as Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

“This leadership transition is deliberate, it’s thoughtful, and it’s designed to make sure this firm is as strong tomorrow as it is today,” said Smith. “As CEO, I will continue to focus on the long-term vision of the firm, while Justin’s role as President allows him to expand SCB’s reach and ensure we’re meeting the needs of our clients, communities, and people.”

As President, McElfresh will focus on guiding SCB’s day-to-day direction, strengthening client relationships, and ensuring the firm’s strategic goals translate into action. Smith, as CEO, will continue to steward the broader vision and strategy of the practice. Together, their collaboration ensures SCB remains both forward-looking and grounded in delivering results.

“It is an honor to lead Sherman Carter Barnhart as President,” said McElfresh. “Our firm has a rich legacy of design excellence and community partnership, and my vision is grounded in three priorities: delivering outstanding design and service, creating growth and opportunity for our people, and developing the next generation of leaders. The future of Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects is about empowering our team while continuing the culture of collaboration that defines who we are.”

This transition is part of SCB’s long-term succession plan, ensuring stability while positioning the firm for continued success. Additional leadership appointments will be announced this fall, reflecting the depth of talent across the practice.
