Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects CEO Mike Smith Retires

After 35 years of dedicated service, leadership, and lasting contributions, Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects celebrates the retirement of longtime CEO Mike Smith.

Throughout his distinguished career, Mike has played an instrumental role in shaping both the firm’s architectural practice and its culture. His leadership and expertise have influenced many of the firm’s most significant projects across K-12 education, judicial and civic facilities, multifamily housing, and, most recently, higher education, where he led the firm’s higher education studio.

In 2016, Mike and fellow Principal Kenny Stanfield assumed ownership of Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects as part of a successful transition from founders Steve Sherman, David Carter, and Charlie Barnhart. Over the following decade, Mike helped guide the firm through an important period of growth and evolution, building upon the foundation established by its founders while creating new opportunities for future generations of leaders.

Among his many contributions, Mike championed a collaborative, team-oriented culture, strengthened relationships across the firm’s studios, and established new pathways for professional growth and leadership. His commitment to developing people and encouraging shared success has left an enduring mark on the organization.

Equally important has been Mike’s extraordinary institutional knowledge, technical expertise, and steady leadership. His ability to draw upon decades of experience while embracing new ideas has provided invaluable perspective on the firm’s most complex and significant projects. For colleagues and clients alike, Mike has been a trusted advisor, mentor, and friend.

In anticipation of Mike’s planned retirement, Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects has thoughtfully evolved its leadership structure over the past year to ensure a seamless transition and position the firm for continued success. This process included the appointment of Principal Justin McElfresh, AIA, as President, along with expanded leadership responsibilities across the firm’s studios and operations.

The transition reflects the same philosophy of shared leadership and collaboration that Mike helped establish. With an experienced leadership team already in place, the firm moves forward with strong continuity, enduring client relationships, and an unwavering commitment to the people and communities it serves.

“Mike’s influence on Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects extends far beyond the buildings we’ve designed. He has helped shape who we are as a firm and, more importantly, the people we’ve become along the way. Throughout his career, he has been generous with his knowledge, committed to developing others, and willing to place his trust in the next generation of leadership. On a personal level, I am especially grateful for his mentorship, his friendship, and the confidence he has placed in me. Mike leaves behind a remarkable legacy, not simply because of what he accomplished, but because of the opportunities he created for others to succeed. We are a stronger firm because of his leadership, and his influence will continue to be felt for many years to come,” said McElfresh.

As Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects approaches five decades of serving its clients and communities, Mike’s legacy remains an important part of the firm’s foundation and future. The entire Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects family extends its sincere appreciation to Mike for 35 extraordinary years of dedication, leadership, and friendship, and wishes him the very best in his well-deserved retirement.
