A 21st Century Middle School

The Corbin community was actively involved with the planning and design of the new Corbin Middle School (CMS). Multiple design charette sessions with students, teachers, parents, board members, support staff, administrative staff, and community members, along with multiple visits to select schools, and a comprehensive audit of the current program led to the development of the design of the new CMS.

Components and attributes that drove the 21st Century design include classrooms sized to allow for learning that is personalized, flexible, blended, collaborative, and performance/project based. Common teaching planning areas to support the school’s existing and long-standing team teaching approach. The goal of the Media Center design was to create a space where students are inspired to learn. Utilizing a “zoning” format, creates the opportunity for many activities including students’ presentations, research, quiet reading areas, co-teaching collaborative areas, project stations, and media production areas in the Media Center to be utilized simultaneously.

The gymnasium serves as a multi-purpose space serving the school as well as the community. It includes high school regulation sized floors as well as a stage area for presentations, plays, band, and choir performances. The gym includes 800 chair back seats. The arts program, located adjacent to the stage, features classrooms specifically tailored for band, vocal, and dance, as well as a piano/keyboard lab.

The overall plan for the new Corbin Middle School features two wings with the media center as the central/focal point of the school. The 7th and 8th grade wing is two stories while the 6th grade wing is 1 story. The school is sited to take advantage of the solar orientation to maximize daylighting.

Corbin Middle School features an advanced security notification system developed by Sherman Carter Barnhart.

A future phase will include an athletics building, a softball complex, tennis courts and a soccer field.
