A Work Ready Skills Center

Challenged with needing to provide both college preparatory as well as career/work-ready skill classes, Russell County Schools in partnership with The Russell County Industrial Development Authority, Lake Cumberland Area Development District, Somerset Community College, Western Kentucky University, Eastern Kentucky University, Lindsey Wilson College, and local businesses hired Sherman Carter Barnhart to design the new Lake Cumberland Regional College & Workforce Center to offer opportunities to receive academic and technical degrees for Russell, Adair, and Casey County students as well as adults in the community.

Sherman Carter Barnhart throughout programming sessions, worked closely with local businesses, college, and university administrators, as well as Russell County Schools district administrators to design the new Center to provide program spaces in support of the classes and certifications needed in the area.

The design solution focuses on flexible and adaptable spaces for collaboration among students, programs, and faculty. Presentation/demonstration classrooms are used by industry professionals, Russell County Schools (and adjoining districts), as well as postsecondary institutions, to provide specialized training. The industrial volume of space and aesthetics, specifically the high bay area, allows students to experience “real world” working conditions for all trades and provides excellent space for storage of materials for welding, auto repair, construction lumber, etc.

The design of the Lake Cumberland Regional College & Workforce Center will reflect a corporate headquarter image, furthering the “real world connection”.
