NASHVILLE – Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects, a regional firm focused on the design of K-12 schools, universities, affordable housing and civic and judicial centers, is deepening its presence in Tennessee.
The firm is pleased to announce the official and immediate opening of its Nashville-area office, which will serve as Sherman Carter Barnart’s home base in Tennessee and accommodate clients throughout the region.
Brandon Ward, an associate principal who has worked for the firm since 2005, has moved to Nashville and will direct the office.
Sherman Carter Barnhart currently has Kentucky offices in Lexington, Paducah, and Louisville and has worked on projects in Tennessee as well as Missouri, South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, New York, Alabama and West Virginia.
Greater Nashville was a natural area for a more prominent and permanent presence, said Mike Smith, AIA, LEED AP, and Sherman Carter Barnhart’s president.
“We’re growing,” Smith said. “Nashville is the perfect place for us to put in deeper roots.”
Smith said Sherman Carter Barnhart is looking forward to helping more Tennessee schools, universities and affordable housing agencies achieve their goals and meet modern challenges.
“We believe in exceptional design that changes people’s lives,” Smith said. “Everybody deserves exceptional design.”

Ward joined Sherman Carter Barnhart while still in school, and has been an integral part of the firm’s affordable housing studio for over 15 years. He’s worked on major projects such as the revitalization of Bluegrass Aspendale, Lexington Housing Authority, as well as the Louisville Metro Housing Authority revitalizations of Sheppard Square and Liberty Green. He has most recently worked on the Beecher Terrace revitalization, a large P3 development in Louisville. Additional Housing Authorities he’s worked with include; St. Louis, MO; East St. Louis, IL; Spartanburg, SC; Evansville, IN; and Paducah, KY.
